Tesla Roadster Unveil Pushed to Late May or June as Musk Cites 'Testing and Validation'
Summary
Elon Musk delays the next-generation Tesla Roadster unveiling for at least the eighth time since the 2017 prototype reveal, pushing the demo from late April to late May or June 2026. The CEO says extensive testing is required to avoid a failed demonstration.
During Tesla’s first-quarter 2026 earnings call on April 22, CEO Elon Musk announced yet another postponement of the long-awaited next-generation Roadster unveiling. The demonstration, previously scheduled for late April 2026, has now been pushed back by approximately one month to late May or early June.
Musk attributed the delay to the need for “extensive testing and validation before we can actually have a demo, and not have something go wrong with the demo.” He remained characteristically optimistic, describing the upcoming reveal as potentially “one of the most spectacular demos ever” and suggesting the production vehicle will be “very different than what we’ve shown previously.”
The Roadster’s timeline has become the most drawn-out product schedule in Tesla’s history. Since the prototype debuted in November 2017 with promised 2020 deliveries, the target has shifted at least eight times. Production is now not expected to begin until 12 to 18 months after the eventual unveil, placing realistic customer deliveries somewhere in 2027 or 2028 — nearly a decade after the initial announcement.
Some reservation holders have expressed growing frustration. Thousands placed deposits ranging from $50,000 to $250,000 as far back as 2017, and the program’s contact email was briefly shut down in late 2025 before being restored after public complaints. Meanwhile, competitors including Rimac, BYD, and Xiaomi have brought high-performance electric vehicles to market in the years Tesla has spent revising the Roadster’s timeline.
Musk has previously teased optional SpaceX cold-gas thrusters that could enable sub-one-second 0-60 mph acceleration and brief hovering capability, though it remains unclear which of these dramatic features will make it into the production vehicle versus remaining conceptual.
